come on man give us the 2.1 now stop testing our limits se ................why are u doing it to ur customers the service centers dont no anything bout it and u dont tell us anything ............................................................what do we have to do its been 7 months since the launch of x 10 but still no 2.1 u gota be ashamed bout it
I discovered very quickly with this, my first Android device that ordinary people with no other big tech. interest are likely to become farrrr too interested in the Android updates, to the point that it creates unnecessary hype and pressure on companies like SE.
However, these aren't cheap phones. And as Apple in particular has demonstrated, with these kinds of goods you can fully expect better service. These aren't €60 phones after all! And irrespective of what you knew about Android before you purchased, these updates aren't just about hype and gimmicks, there is a degree of it which is about good quality service...from that perspective, I support the need for updating - if only to see the money spent be well-used or just to have (as a consumer) a good-quality device compared to others.
On Windows you'll probably receive "Your Window does not meet the requirements for this update" or "Your Windows already has the latest version, this update will now terminate".
Basically you pay the price you did for the phone, and expected the appropriate level of customer service to come with it, no?
I'm not a developer or anything like that...I'm just the an x10 user like many others...however what Panyah said seems pretty right..!!!
But still, I believe that the developers at SE are really testing the patience of its many and many customers...well u can't just put a phone in such a competitive market at a high price with so many features lacking as compared to its competitors..
When I'm buying a high price phone, I think it's quite logical to expect better things in return...!!!
SE has to keep pace with the market...you can't just stay at 1.6 when the whole market is moving to 2.2 and perhaps to 3.0 by next year..!!!
Mind you 1.6 to 2.1 is a huge leap in development. 2.1 to 2.2 is a relatively minor one. But yes, they are vey testing of our patience.
I think Sony Ericsson has blundered blindly before now.
I'm finding myself wondering exactly why i prefer their phones when other manufacturers place a stronger software team behind their products. Yes, my X10 is a quality product, sure it misses a few features i rarely used before, but it really drops down when it's based on a evolving software platform and SE fail to keep in touch with that aspect. If they don't start to show promise in their product support in terms of consistent software updates on the platform they've created the product for, i'll simply move on to a manufacturer who does come my next phone.
Android is an evolving platform, SE need to recognise this and support it properly. Certainly not in this lacklustre slapdash manner, and they need to communicate properly in advance to let consumers know where they are at. Take a leaf out of ATI or Nvidia if you intend to support products with software updates, if not then simply carry on "as is" and lose customers.
mind you, none of the major manufacturers actually provide very good customer services. Samsung is better these days, as is LG. They had learnt to listen, but i fear it is only a matter of time when profit understates customers importance.
Exactly what does this mean?

Apparently you had this feeling prior to buying the phone. You knew that it was based on 1.6, and other phones had the latest software. SE did not hide that fact.

Would you spell out what exactly it is you are looking for? They cannot update a product until Android supports it. May I suggest you read my first post.
Perhaps you would list what features you are looking for in 2.1, 2.2 and follow-on updates. Then indicate why they are important to you.
I find it very easy to complain/critique something without offering an alternative solution. The operating system is Android. Period!! As Android changes, SE must change, this takes time. If you read the post you will note that 2.1 requires 2.0 base, which in turn requires an update r6. The date was moved out as noted in my first post. We on this forum would like concrete data as to how many 'bugs', and or 'fixes' have been issued by other companies since they announced that they are running on a certain platform. 2.1, 2.2, etc.. If you do not like the phone, simply buy another product and stop complaining about Sony Ericsson products.
I do not work for Sony Ericsson, but read everything relative to Android and SE. Understand, this is my first Android phone, a new operating system, and yes it is based on a VERY GOOD platform, which, should they continue in the direction they have indicated it will become the only platform. I have read the design specifications for Android (the system is very secure with respect to user data, something I am more concerned about than bells and whistles), the content of each release (is there something in that release that I truly want, if not I will wait for the next release, my world will not end), and dependencies on prior releases. I am a retired software engineer, I do know the design thru release phases, interaction with other suppliers, and how to target what for which release. The worst thing any company can do is release buggy code; followed by fix after fix.
Does it really matter if you cannot 'pinch to zoom', or have to perform another action? Once the data is displayed, do you not have to stop and read it? I access the web, and literally, after pressing 'go' I have my page, but then it takes me some time to read what is displayed, is that not the case with you? Have you considered how much work is involved in going from one density screen (pixels) to a higher density? Then multiply that by the number of different screen sizes and restrictions imposed and you may understand the complexity of what we may call 'a simple' function. Consider the amount of work involved in simply rotating the screen (vertical/horizontal), it is not magic. And yes IT MUST WORK!! Or there would be no end to your gripes. Some of us complain about a 'slight lag', so what?
I need one product for this phone, that is FLASH. It is scheduled for release 3.0. Would I like it sooner, yes! Why? Because during the hurricane months a side I visit where I track storms and the graphics requires it. Should SE release it just for me? Heck no!! I can wait. My world will not end. My wife's Apple did not support FLASH until recently, while I was enjoying it on my SE XPERIA X1 out of the box. What do I do, I use my 'slooowww' X! to view that site. Problem solved.
Just sit back and learn about the phone, enjoy it, because everyday I uncover something new about this phone. IT IS A MONSTER!
Please calm down! Don't break a circuit!
Remember that at least half the people here are still below 25. They grew up having everything the way they wanted it, with little resistane from parental figures. They do not understand te amount of work that goes into programming something, especially the debugging process. I know I was there. I gave up because I could not handle the pressure coming from customers' indecisiveness and unreasonable complaints.
That thing about a buggy OS reminds me a lot of what Windows was like, from Windows 95 to Windows XP (before the service packs).... I miss those days of constantly trying my best to stop the OS from certainfailures. Sigh.....
BTW, I seriously think it is about time we the consumers show Adobe/Macromedia that Flash is not a requirement, even though it is becoming ubiquitous on the web.

I do like the way you quote out of context Panyah, it doesn't show the entire line of thought when you do that does it?
I'll clarify my stance on the subject, just so it is completely clear to yourself. I was indeed well aware that the X10 was based on Android 1.6, and was also equally well aware that an update of the OS was due in September (sourced from various sites while i pondered my next phone). With regards to other phones having the latest software, it actually didn't occur to me to buy a different phone, mainly because i know SE hardware is exceptionally reliable (i still have an older S700i in use.). So my primary concern for choosing a phone was reliability, not software.
Certainly the Android platform is fresh, and yes i do completely agree with both yourself and darkmax about ensuring that any updates released for the OS have to be tested through various QA stages - that isn't in question. I'd expect no less than this from SE, and approve of the fact they do test properly before releasing any updates, so as an end consumer we get the best experience. Another reason why i chose SE over others phone manufacturers when upgrading.
My point is this, solely this, nothing to read into at all or even discuss.
I do not expect for SE to start manufacturing handheld devices based on an evolving plaform (in this case Android and it's various versions) without ensuring they have the capacity (jn terms of manpower) to push through updates in a timely fashion.
Let's be honest, Android is a fresh and developing platform, it's a great direction for SE to go as it adds functionality and also compliments their existing strengths in design. If they decide to go with the Andriod platform properly, they need to have the ability for a faster turn around for OS updates, while at the same time ensuring they have the proper QA in place to ensure a great end user experience.
No, i don't expect them to go further than Android 2.2 Froyo, hardware questions aside, they need to give consumers a clear upgrade path while still supporting older models within a set time frame. For the price we pay for the product, i don't think a 2 year software support program would go far amiss. That's my own opinion. It would certainly gain them some traction and seperate them from their competitors who throw out handsets 2 a dozen, and don't give them proper support, wouldn't it?
With regards to any of my comments, they are purely my own stance on how i feel SE should move forward. I've seen so many comments that are negative towards SE, both here and elsewhere, my original post was in response to the OP and not any subsequent posts (which to be honest i skipped over). I honestly hope SE manage to make more of a dent, i hate to see them fall behind Samsung et al in the Android device market when i know they are capable of much more.
By the way, darkmax, i wish i was under 25 again
