With regards to the 2.2 update, I don't believe it will ever come officially to the x10 family. If it does fine but I am not going to waste any time expecting or hoping it does. A shame though as 2.2 really takes android up a notch in terms of performance and features. In any case, 3.0 devices will start appearing from q1 2011 onwards and by then this x10 will really start looking antiquated. With any luck someone from the dev community will crack the bootloader to allow flashing of custom 2.2 roms even if 3.0 would be impossible because of hardware limitations. Flash support, wifi tethering and installing apps to sd cards will keep me going fine until I am ready to get another device.

I will not advise putting too much hope into 2.2 either. Bluebobx agreed as well. Not officially anyway.

wel never know..

what if they surprise us.. at the end of the month were getting 2.2 update not eclair. haha!

From what I know of SE, nay.... that's almost never gonna happen. There was only once and that was only ONCE.

No, no, no. I'm no employee of theirs. Apparently I'm not good enough. And no, I'm no moderator. If I am, I would be a pretty poor one at that.

But I take your comment as a compliment. Slightly_smiling_Face

By the way, can I ask, does anyone know even roughly the hardware limit of the Xperia family regarding future Android updates? I've a Mini, and I wonder can it take 2.2 and beyond? Then, I suppose 2.1-2.2 can't be that bad? Just, limited RAM, and all that...

Here's the specs for X10 Rachel

And here's for the X10 Mini, and X10 Mini Pro

Last question first - yes your Mini (which my teenage daughter thinks is really cute) will be able to use 2.1 (Eclair) and there's no real objection to 2.2 (Froyo) - assuming that SE decide to release it (and let's be honest - if they don't then they should just stop trying to sell Android phones!). By the way, I came across an old Sony posting, apparently the Mini (or it could have been the Mini Pro) was codenamed "Shakira" - as in the Colombian pop-star.

That was the good news, here's the bad ... it's widely thought that the shortage of internal RAM (384 v's 512MB) on the X10 family means that 3.0 (Gingerbread) or 3.1 (not sure of the numbering - but it's codename is "Honeycomb") versions of Android are never going to be available officially. The opinions I've seen are divided on the subject, with some saying that 3.0 will run in less than 512MB, but it'll be painfully slow (presumably because the OS then has to do a lot of memory management). The "officially" caveat was because I think it's remotely possible that an X10 hacker may be able to get the vanilla firmware onto it, but the problems with that are technical (Sony use an encrypted bootloader - don't ask me why - seems like a moronic decision to me), legal (there's some concern that breaking the encryption is illegal in the US) and logistical (there's a perception in the 'droid hacking community that the X10 is a minority device - and therefore not worth the effort)

I haven't seen any information on whether there's any updates between 2.2 and 3.0 - I'm guessing from the lack of a gap in the naming that either there isn't, or if there is then they're really just "service packs" just issued to fix bugs or security holes. Actually that's something that really worries me - if there are problems found then it's very unlikely that us Sony customers will be allowed to get access to them.

By the way, I claim no special knowledge or expertise - I'm merely someone who bought his X10 on it's looks (how shallow is that?!), who's kids like the looks of the X10Mini's and who's trying to get the best out of the hardware I've bought.

I would completely agree with you - SE has lost the race again to HTC, Samsung and Motorola. It seems that the 2.2 would be the end of SE X10 and meaning time for us to shift to other OEMs. :smileyangry::smileyangry:
