Vaio DVD/CD stopped working

I have reinstalled XP on my Vaio PCG-9291 (aka F709 apparently, although Sony's sites pretend it never existed!) and my DVD/CD has stopped working. I'm sure the last time I installed XP on the machine the drive worked, but as I don't have the original disks that came with the machine I can't try anything there.

Device manager lists the following "other device" - unknown -

SOSHSBS SVS-SOS SDSCS452

I have no idea what this refers to, and am guessing that it must be the DVD/CD drive. Any help welcome. Thanks.
