Will unlock force a reset

I want to unlock my xz1,i have the code and I was wondering can i do it without a sim and will it cause the phone to do a factory reset, thanks

If you mean carrier unlock, it will not force a factory reset, but you need a different carriers sim before you can input an unlock code.
