Call and SMS notifications won't play

My phone won't play any notifications when I receive a text,  neither will it play any ringtone when someone calls. It works well after a reboot,  but only for a few minutes.  I tried a hard reset and even factory reset but the same thing happens, it'll work for a few minutes and stop eventually .  I have Checked all the settings to make sure notifications are turned on. 

Please help

Can you reboot your phone in safe mode and check if you get the same issue? Use the blue link for a guide.

My phone is currently running in safe mode,  I'll have to observe for a few more hours. 

But what next when I find that the notifications continue/discontinue  to play in safe mode?

If the issue disappears in safe mode, this means that one of your installed apps are causing it. As safe mode will disable all 3rd party apps. You'll have to figure out which app is acting up by uninstalling one app each time and testing (tedious), or by performing a software repair using Xperia Companion and re-installing your apps one by one.

Okey, check this path

Settings>Apps

1st click on 3dot icon and select "show system"

Now, click on gear icon and go to advanced category and select "special access"

Now click on "Do not disturb access"

See any app manage do not disturb function?

Now go to Settings>Lockscreen & security>Apps with useage access

See any third-party apps (no system apps) is listed and permission activeted?

If yes, turn one of them and test the problem is solved? If no check other one and... 

If notification solved, means you find the app break your notifications.

@ Quester I at least have established that a third party app is the cause. 

I haven't however managed to find out which one it is exactly.

@GenomeX my phone says "no installed app has requested for do not disturb access" 

Also I have toggled the settings under 'apps with usage access'  and the notifications still won't play
