Sony A1 Series
Sony announced new 4K HDR television series designed to deliver even wider brightness range and higher contrast. The new BRAVIA TVs make the best use of 4K HDR (High Dynamic Range) content with the combination of their unique image processor and display device technologies.
The world of HDR has been greatly expanding with the advent of video streaming services, 4K UHD Blu-ray, and recently with PlayStation®4 gaming. Now, more than ever before, accurate image processing is playing a crucial role in delivering a dazzling picture according to the filmmakers’ or game developers’ intentions. The 4K HDR Processor X1™ Extreme from Sony’s flagship Z Series, has been widely acclaimed for its ability to produce lifelike picture with superb texture, depth, colour, and contrast, bringing a significant leap forward in the space of HDR. With two new TV series, Sony introduces 4K HDR Processor X1 Extreme’s power to a broader audience.
Alongside the X1 Extreme processor, the new XE93 series features Slim Backlight Drive+, an improved LED backlight technology allowing more precise and accurate local dimming control compared to Slim Backlight Drive. With its quad-edge LED structure and X-tended Dynamic Range™ PRO local dimming and boosting technology, it brings superior brightness and exceptional contrast – in fact it will deliver 10 times the XDR contrast*2 of conventional LED TV.
In order to provide a wider selection of 4K HDR displays, Sony will introduce 4K HDR OLED TV as “BRAVIA OLED”. The A1 Series offers a totally new visual experience with the combination of superior picture quality of OLED with X1 Extreme, the world’s first sound system in a large screen TV*1, and its unique cutting edge form factor.
Thanks to OLED’s over 8 million self-illuminating pixels; the A1 series brings a significantly enriched visual experience with unprecedented black, authentic colour, blur-less image and a wide viewing angle. The X1 Extreme precisely controls the tremendous number of pixels and extends the capability of OLED to deliver an exquisite 4K HDR picture.
BRAVIA OLED’s innovations do not end with incredible picture performance. A1 series is the world’s first large screen TV*1 which can emit its great sound from the screen itself. Taking the advantage of the OLED’s backlight-less structure, Sony developed a new Acoustic Surface™ sound technology which can emanate the sound directly from the screen itself. This allows a perfect unification of picture and sound unattainable by conventional TVs. It produces a wide sound and image synchronization even off to the sides. Together with OLED’s exceptionally wide viewing angle, the A1 series offers unmatched visual and aural experience regardless of viewing position.
The Acoustic Surface technology lends to cutting-edge design of the A1 series by doing away with conventional speakers usually located around the TV. The result is a unique stand-less form factor with no distraction from the picture.
Both new XE93 and A1 series will additionally support Dolby Vision™, the HDR format from Dolby Laboratories, which paired with Sony’s unique technologies will further enrich the visual experience.
Sony also announced and array of additional 3 series of 4K HDR and 3 series of Full HD HDR televisions coming to retail in 2017. They all incorporate Sony’s proprietary technologies including the newly-developed 4K HDR processor X1 (XE90 and XE85 series only) to deliver industry-leading picture quality.
Sony continues to bring excitement to customers through the enrichment of visual expression by incorporating a powerful mix of display device technologies with its own image processing technology.
New Sony TV models and key features:
A1 Series (77”, 65”, and 55” Class model) 4K HDR OLED TV
XE94 Series (75” Class model) 4K HDR TV
XE93 Series (65” and 55” Class models) 4K HDR TV
WE75 Series (49” and 43” Class models) Full HD HDR TV

*2 XDR is the abbreviation of X-tended Dynamic Range. This is the perceptible contrast level expanded by X-tended Dynamic Range PRO technology, which is the unique figure calculated for the contrast which users actually feel and experience (XDR Contrast). This figure is based on our conventional TV without local dimming.
*3 Compatibility of HDR is all HDR PS4 Game titles via HDMI and HDR videos of built-in Netflix app only. HDR image signal specifically means HDR10 Media Profile format (commonly referred to as HDR10). Compatibility with all other HDR content is not guaranteed.
*4 Compatibility of HDR is all HDR PS4 Game titles via HDMI only. HDR image signal specifically means HDR10 Media Profile format (commonly referred to as HDR10). Compatibility with all other HDR content is not guaranteed.

To give the most immersive experience to what you are watching and listening to at home it must be the best, and in terms of the technology available now that means 4K HDR for picture and object-based audio for sound with Dolby Atmos and DTS: X. Sony has created this ultimate solution to fill your home with superior sound and pure pictures with the added factor of Sony’s style and reputation for quality.
Watch films as they are intended
The UBP-X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player is the ultimate in cutting edge Ultra HD technology and the finest way to watch your treasured movie collection. This player has been created in partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment to ensure the best possible playback from 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Discs as the creators intended, and with the added benefit of 4K picture quality.
But what is picture without sound? With Hi-res audio playback capability the X800 treats you to audiophile-quality reproduction of any source. DSEE HX™ upscales the original signal’s sampling frequency and bit-depth. You’ll be rewarded with higher fidelity and wider dynamic range to whatever you are listening to and in closer to High-Resolution Audio quality.
Most Blu-ray Disc Players send both audio and video to your TV via the same HDMI output. To ensure that sound quality is uncompromised, the X800 can split audio and video signals, routing them to separate HDMI outputs to reduce electrical cross-interference.
The extraordinary quality is encased in an exceptionally rigid Frame and Beam chassis design that minimises mechanical vibration. On the inside, there is a full complement of audio codec compatibility, letting you enjoy pristine High-Resolution files encoded right up to 192kHz/24-bit and DSD up to 11.2MHz [1].
The X800 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player utilizes a Sony developed Precision HD drive to help maintain consistent performance with virtually every optical disc format, including DVD Video and DVD Audio; CD and Super Audio CD; and Blu-ray 3D, and BD-ROM media in additional to almost any format available via USB.
The player further incorporates a variety of video codecs that can deliver 4K streaming from video streaming services such as Netflix, along with Sony’s advanced video processing that upscales SD and HD content to near 4K resolution. Additionally, when playing 4K HDR content on a 4K SDR television the X800 utilizes a unique Sony algorithm to reproduce the proper brightness and colour gradations to provide the best picture possible.
Integrated Bluetooth® means you can slip on a pair of wireless headphones for private uninterrupted listening if you want no distractions, while the sound can continue to play from the TV for the rest of the family in the room to relish. For a different scenario, you can pair wireless speakers to the Blu-ray Player to appreciate sounds simultaneously in the front of TV and in places far from TVs depending on where you’ve positioned the wireless speaker.
Immersive and wireless sound
Join the Dolby Atmos revolution and use the HT-ST5000 soundbar that has also been created in partnership with Sony Pictures for the best 3D sound cinematic experience. Its extensive connectivity features offer compatibility with the latest 4K, HDR and HDCP2.2 standards, working perfectly with the X800 to create that cinema screen feeling in your front room.
The stylish soundbar adds impressive multi-channel audio to your viewing with less living room clutter. With the extra dimension of two new upward firing Dolby Atmos enabled speakers at either end of the bar, a thrillingly detailed 7.1.2 channel listening experience is possible. Combined with coaxial High-Resolution Audio speakers, featuring separate woofer and tweeter drivers in one single unit music, dialogue and sound effects wrap themselves around you. The powerful wireless sub provides the deep low punches.
It has never been easier to play your choice of music back using Chromecast built-in[2] and Spotify Connect, meaning you have access to over 100 music-streaming apps right at your fingertips in addition to the flexibility of the Wireless Multi-Room, plus Bluetooth and NFC.
Experience versatile entertainment
Recreating the cinema experience is easy with the STR-DN1080 AV Receiver. Dolby Atmos and DTS: X support alongside 4K HDR pass-through and upscale, plus High-Resolution Audio capability including DSD native playback. This all leads to the STR-DN1080 being built for serious sound, even being able to simulate surround sound with extra channels – providing a total 7.1.2 surround experience.
Built to enjoy that 3D surround or object based natural sound experience, the DN1080 has a flexible speaker solution to ‘relocate’ sound to simulate the optimal position and angle for the best audio experience, and works around any physical space restrictions. The Phantom Surround Back setting adds an extra two virtual rear speakers for a full 7.1.2 channel experience, with a 5.2.1 set up.
Multiple connections make it even simpler to connect all your devices, with 6 HDMI inputs and 2 outputs that provide full HDCP 2.2 compliance and supports the latest 4K 60P (4:4:4[3]) The STR-DN1080 is even compatible with the new BT.2020 wide colour gamut broadcast standard. Sony today announced the expansion of its ultra short throw home theatre line up with the introduction of the VPL-VZ1000ES 4K HDR home theatre projector, designed to integrate easily into people’s homes. Sony’s latest innovative laser light source projector is High Dynamic Range (HDR) compatible with native 4K resolution. It can be positioned as little as six inches away from the wall, yet command the room with a 254 cm (100 inch) image, measured diagonally in 16:9. When powered off, the compact and elegant VPL-VZ1000ES virtually disappears into the décor. It is now possible to have an immersive viewing experience for a wide range of residential applications, from a home theatre to a living room or bedroom, no matter what the design or layout of your home is.
"Up until now home cinema enthusiasts have needed a dedicated room for watching projected content; this isn't always ideal, since not everyone has the luxury of extra space to accommodate an extra-large screen. The new VPL-VZ1000ES changes this dynamic completely, providing an enchanting home theatre experience up to 120" in your existing living space," said Thomas Issa, Product Manager at Sony Professional Solutions Europe. "Our revolutionary new generation of ultra short throw projectors deliver incredible 4K HDR imagery just inches away from your wall, then fade into the existing room design once turned off."
The VPL-VZ1000ES is approximately 925 x 494 x 219mm in size and weighs about 35 kg, making it small and light enough to complement virtually any decor. This is approximately 40% smaller than the currently available SonyLSPX-W1S 4K ultra short throw and will have a significantly lower manufacturer’s retail price. Despite its compact size and lower price, the VPL-VZ1000ES generates 2,500 lumens of colour light output, 25% brighter than the LSPX-W1S Life Space UX projector. Sony's advanced SXRD™ panels, coupled with the Z-Phosphor™ laser light engine, produce high dynamic contrast, enhancing the highlights and lowlights of HDR content. The VPL-VZ1000ES projector’s Z-Phosphor laser light source hits peak brightness much quicker than conventional projector lamps. Brightness and color accuracy are also maintained longer, reducing the inconvenience of lamp replacement.
Unlock the walls of your imagination
The unique form factor of the VPL-VZ1000ES opens up a whole new set of usage scenarios. It is the ideal projector for large display sizes in small spaces, as well as locations with high ceilings. And since the projector is mounted in front rather than behind the viewers, there are no issues with shadows or obstructions from ceiling lights or fans. You can turn any wall into a life-sized window to another world. And for modern houses and apartments with large windows and limited wall space, a drop down screen in front of the window enables great viewing of TV, movies and sports. When the show is over, raise the screen, and once again enjoy your view.
Sony's breakthrough new projector allows consumers to have a huge screen in their living room with a simple elegant installation available for the home. This makes the VPL-VZ1000ES unlike anything consumers have ever experienced before in home cinema viewing and ultra short throw projection.
The VPL-VZ1000ES ultra short throw 4K HDR home theatre projector will be available from April 2017.
