Hi,
Having trouble with the optical pass through on this set. I have to turn the speaker output to audio system to get proper DTS, DD passed through to my AV amp otherwise it seems to only pass PCM stereo.
This is a pain as I have an old AV amp with only one optical and I thought I would be able to use the TV for the HDMI inputs to pass DTS, DD out.
I don't want the AV amp on all the time only for movies ect so having to keep switching is a real pain. Why can't the TV be set to output to the internal speakers and pass through at the same time then all I would need to do is just turn the amp on and turn the TV volume down to zero.
I think this is a big design flaw for a TV that cost the best part of 2K how do you get Sony to maybe change this is a firmware update?
Thanks
David.

Hi there
Both TV and AMP will have to support HDMI ARC (Audio Return Channel). The TV does, however for this to work, you AMP needs to support it too.
Cheers
Hi Quinnicus
Thanks the AMP is an OLD Proceed AVP2 so I am in no rush to change it. It doesn't support HDMI however your explanation was useful for future reference.
My current concern is having to keep changing fir internal to external speakers/audio system where it would have been more useful just to pass though DD, or DTS all the time. At the end of the day you wouldn't want to pass through stereo PCM which is what the TV does know?
I am sure it is probably because the TV is down mixing to 2 channel for the internal speakers but I don't want the optical to be down mixed. I also don't want to run my large AV system for watching normal TV.
My thoughts are justified for a TV costing 2K. Maybe Sony can fix this in a future firmware release if it is not hardware limited.
Thanks
David.
Hi there
I've been reading through this - and im a little confused.
Are you trying to connect a device to the TV via HDMI then output the sound to the AMP via optical? If so, this should work, even with DD 5.1.
I also struggling to understand why you need to keep changing from internal and external speakers?
You will need to set Digital Audio Out (optical) to Auto and not PCM.

Wow - I've just looked up Proceed AVP2

Without looking at all the specs and doing alot of research, are you sure its the TV and not at the AMP side of things?
Cheers
Hi Quinnicus,
Yes that is what I am trying to achieve here. As the Old Proceed doesn't have HDMI I am wanting to use the TV as a HDMI switcher.
I think the problem seems to happen when streaming from a NAS box MKV files over DNLA direct to the TV. The files have DTS and the TV will not pass that through unless I switched to external audio system on the TV's speakers setting option.
This must be because the TV doesn't natively support DTS only DD? I have not tried to play the same files over the PS3 as it doesn't support MKV.
I do have a Western Digital TV streamer so I will try that to see if it has a better outcome.
The amp is definitely working as it should and it only receives PCM stereo unless I switch the speaker setting. Maybe the TV is down mixing the 5.1 for stereo for the TV speakers which makes sense however I would of hopped that a top end TV at £2,000 could still direct pass though optical at the same time. I am not sure if the is a hardware limitation or something a firmware update might resolve?
thanks
David.
Hi there
I am out of suggestions on your current setup, however I have been looking at this product - which may offer you the solution of adding HDMI ports to feed between AMP and TV. And considering that you have quite a high-end setup, that AMP can still be of use

I havent gone through all the in's and outs of it all, buy on the face of it - looks promising. So you would need to fully research it, to ensure that it would do the job.
Cheers
