hi i have vgn-bz12vn when i try to write to a external usb hd drive (sata drive)it comes up with that it is write protected.There is no write protection switch or tab on the drive as it is a normal 300 gb sata drive.the laptop is running windows 7 home 64 bit.there is nothing wrong with the drive as i works ok on my desk top and other laptops.

This is a new one to me but try the following:
1. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories > Right click CMD and select ‘Run as Administrator’ – this may not apply depending on operating system – otherwise just open CMD.
2. Type diskpart and press enter.
3. Type list volume and press enter.
4. Type select volume #, where # is the number of the drive that's giving you the write-protected error.
5. Type attributes disk clear readonly and then press enter.
6. Type exit and press enter.

thanks rich that has worked this had a usb access setting but when i loaded windows 7 i lost it and it locked the usb ports to read only. thanks dave
