Vaio PCG-Z1RMP CD drive problem

The CD drive on my 2 yr old laptop has suddenly stopped functioning, both read and write. There seem nothing physically wrong with the drive and it clicks in the usual way when I insert a CD and close it - but that's all. The drive doesn't register any more in the system. I have tried all the usual help procedures for hardware detection, but it simply does not show up anywhere. It seems completely dead. Does this mean a drive hardware failure? Or is there anything else that I can try?

Hi Filer,

Is the drive present in Device Manager, if so are there any error codes?
If not present in Device Manager then I fear that, as you probebly suspect, the drve is dead:smileysad:

Thanks Rich.

No, the drive is not present there (or in any other view). If this suggests that it is in fact dead, I'll probably buy a small USB CD/CVD drive for the time being, since I don't want to spend a lot of money repairing/replacing this drive when I'll probably change this laptop at the end of the year.

Best solution in the short term, but if you ever need to recover your system from the recovery disks, as opposed to HDDR then the problems start, as you will be unable to boot from a USB device.

Thanks again, Rich

Rich,

Correct me if I'm wrong but the Z1 doesn't have a HDDR

That is the point I was making Kee-Lo, but it was badly worded. There should have been "having" between "to" and "HDDR"......

Sorry I should have spent more time reading.
I have this horrible habbit of skimming posts nowadays!
