TV out. How configures it?

Hi all,

I've tried to connect my Vaio PCG-GRT 816M through its A/V interface to RCA interface of TV set. Pressing FN+F7 buttons the video should be displayed both onto LCD monitor of notebook and onto TV screen. Unfortunately no output is displayed onto TV screen. The cable is ok (it was checked with another laptop without problems). Any suggestion?
The graphical board is an nVidia GeForce 5600.

you are not alone with this problem. I have tried to use a standard TV with my PCG-FR415B and have had no luck. I have successfully used it with an old computer monitor, though this does not use the video out socket.

I have tried playing with most of the settings (not recommended) but nothing appears.
Interestingly, while inserting the cable, a blurred image appears while half-in, but then goes back to black.

Does ANYONE know how to do this???

Are you using the correct cable?

You need to use an AV-Cable which has a minijack connector on one end and 3 RCA (also called cinch) connectors on the other end. For example, the Sony VMC-20FR which is available via direct sales and various retailers. Please note that not all TVs have RCA in, if your TV does not have RCA in, you need an RCA to Scart converter (provided of course that your TV has a Scart in). If your VAIO has an S-video port, you can use this port as an alternative means of connection.

Hi Rob,

of course I've used the right cable and yes my TV has an RCA interface. What I've noticed is the impossibility to activate the TV. In other words if I select the desktop display Properties-->Setting tab-->Advanced the Display tab isn't available so I cannot activate an external monitor as well a TV as video output (the only option for doing that is to press Fn+F8 buttons). I tried to update the graphic card driver (my PC has an nVidia GeForce 5600 Go card) to the newest one available onto Sony Vaio-Link but nothing changed. I'm thinking to use the drivers available onto nVidia web site but I wonder could that generate new problems on my PC?

Just another thing. if you go onto Knowledge base you can find the procedure to connect a Vaio with an ATI-Rage mobility videochip to a TV or an external monitor as I explained above. So I think the problem is the graphic driver if I cannot do that. But where can I find the right drivers?

just another thing. Do you know if the Sony cable is proprietary? Maybe the problem I experienced with TV connection is related to that

The Sony cable isn't proprietary but I have seen ones which are connected differently. If I can remember to bring my multimeter from work tomorrow then I'll post the connections for you if you want.
