Hello
I upgraded the memory on this unit from 4GB to 8GB, since then when it is powered off, it will not power on UNLESS the ram modules are swapped or one is removed, all I see is the num/caps/scroll flash, then the HD/power leds and then the same thing a few seconds later.
The new RAM module is identical to the one that came with the unit (Kingston, same part number, etc)
Both modules pass any kind of memory test (so the memory is not defective).
If the modules are swapped, the unit always boots and works correctly
I'm at a loss as to why the removing one or swapping modules around would allow booting and the same issue persists even when the original module is the only one in the system
What is the Vaio checking when the power button is pushed before it decides to boot or not??
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, this is driving me nuts
Hi bramaleajp and welcome.
If we assume the modules are identical in every respect then it sounds like a hardware problem and this may be difficult to solve.
Some 25 years ago we had a similar problem with a particular Vaio model. This was finally identified as dry solder joints between the memory carriers and the motherboard. Applying light pressure to the memory modules in their carriers allowed the Vaio to boot normally. The permanent solution was to re-solder the carriers but adding a piece of sponge rubber inside the memory cover worked just as well.
I doubt if you have exactly the same problem but it does sound like a poor connection somewhere that needs a bit of jiggling to work. Check the connections between module/carrier/motherboard for poor contacts. It could also be a faulty motherboard which needs the pressure from a module change to work.
Just a suggestion for you to try!!
All advice gratefully accepted
I've checked the module mounts and they all look soldered correctly
I did add some sponge type material to apply some light pressure on modules, but to no affect
The search continues
Thanks, will check it out
It'd be extremely helpful for others with the same issue in the future if you find the time to update the thread with what you find. ^^
