Does anyone know if it is possible to turn off the keyboard light?

try this..

Open Control Panel.. (with windows 8 it may be easier to search your apps for Vaio Control Center)

The open Vaio Control Center..

You should then see Keyboard & Mouse..

Expand the tree & and you should find be a few options to change your keyboard backlight settings..
