driver problems when installing xp pro sp2 instead of original OS (MCE)

Hi all,

I have just bought a VAIO FE11S in Belgium as I need an azerty keyboard format, however the OS (Windows XP Media Centre Edition) is only provided in Dutch or French. I study in the UK and I have therefore formatted the laptop (made recovery dvds) and installed Win XP Pro SP2 in English but encountered different problems:

Problem 1: unable to install drivers for Modem (Connexant) and Audio Adapter (SigmaTel HD Audio).

Problem 2: shutting down problem - when shutting down it stays at "Windows is shutting down..." screen and does not shut down unless I do it manually by pressing the ON/OFF button.

Any help/advise would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

This seeems a common problem when changing OS or language - Modem and Sound Drivers.

Have you downloaded the preinstalled drivers from Vaio Link?

If so and they do not have setup EXE's for sound and modem, have you tried right clicking on the relevant .inf files and choosing install?

Hi william,

Sorry about the double post was not too sure which category to put it in.

The audio driver is an EXE file - when I run it it produces the following error: "Device Object not present, restart your computer and run setup again". Restarting does not change anything.

Regarding the INF file for the modem - yes i have tried installing it via the Device Manager, right-click then installing, even in Safe-Mode but no luck.

Don't know what else to do.

Thanks

hello !

I have the similar problem too.
My fe-11m is german, but i hate it, and cannot install hungarian or english mui, i decided install win xp or mce.
I make investigation, with the following result:
1.: The original mce cames with KB835221 update which is an uaa hd audio bus driver for ms op. sys..
When i installed this, later i can install modem, and soundcard.
This can you download, when search the net.
The minus: always frozen the system.
I tried the 888111 patch too. It seems working.
I think, the shutdown problem thank to the lan or modem or audio driver.
When i install a clean system, first i install chipset driver, then vga driver, then mui pack, then wlan, and no problem with restarting, shutdowing system.
Then i install lan, and i have the problem with shutdown.
Little mistery.
I think the best choice find someone with english op. system fe-11, and ask him make a recovery dvd, and give it to me and you, and we make clean install with it.

hello,

All my problems are solved - the drivers issue was resolved by installing the KB888111 patch which is in fact the HD Audio Bus Driver for XP Pro w SP2 followed by the modem and audio drivers.

In my case the rebooting and shutting down problems are due to the VGP-VCC1 built-in video camera which seems to cause the problem. The only way to avoid these problems is to disable the camera in the Device Manager.

I am still searching for appropriate drivers that does not cause Windows to crash during shut down...maybe one day.

I have made a bootable DVD with XP Pro SP2 with the KB888111 fix and it works perfectly. Just need to find the correct camera drivers...
