Strange throw behaviour (to TV from smartphone)

Some pictures display with much better quality on my SONY 55X9005b - they are all 8mb & captured with my SONY xperia Z3 smartphone.

If I do not have 'wifi direct' enabled, the lower-quality images only display using a smaller area of the TV screen - the images that display with better quality are displayed full screen.

Enabled screen mirroring (had to enable WiFi on the TV) - still pictures now display full screen & even video works...
