One simple way is to play that particular song, click menu, there is an option 'Set as ringtone'.

Hi thanx for your help but can the tone be set in the same way for alerts like sms or alarm?

For alarm, you have to save selected music/tone to phone memory/system/media/audio/alarms (you need a file manager which you can download from Market).

As for sms alert, there are a couple of apps in the Market.

I don't think the Phone Memory can be written to, unless it's rooted.

My X10 is not rooted.  You can try saving to Phone Memory if yours is not rooted too and find out for yourself.

Tried with file managers on both 1.6 and 2.1 no root, no go. :smileygrin:

You are rite! just tried and was not able to do that.  Hmmmm .... then how did I manage to use some of my favourite songs as my alarm???? I thought I did it that way .... must be a hard disk error 'up there', let me scan it first.
