Sony RDR HXD 1095 picture quality

I have a Sony RDR HXD 1095 for 2-3 years and recently am getting problems with picture quality.  Generally recording from Sky Box or Saorview STB.  Hard to descibe problem but it is very evident with close-ups of people's faces.  The faces appear to shimmer or morph - like there's a few layers moving relative to each other.  This effect is visible during recording or playback - but not on the original.

Could age be a factor - machine is 2-3 years old and used almost daily?

I have the 890 model and am experiencing the same issue - in addition the definition of bright areas such as clouds or blocks of bright colours (eg T shirts) are showing as blocks without definition. This is when recording / playback from a Sony Digital TV.

I have also had the occasional time when the DVD recorder will not boot and has to be unplugged from the mains and left overnight before it will restart.
