hdmi control

In June I purchased from a local retailer the Sony KD49XF9005U and the soundbar supposedly manufactured for this TV (HTXF9000). I added the sony Blu-ray player UBPX700B. I purchased 3 AudioQuest High Speed cables and  a Blekin cable recommended by Apple.. I added my Sky HD satellite box and my apple tv 4k. The apple tv 4k is on hdmi 2 and the blu-ray is on the soundbar. I use hdmi control to select sources so when I want to play a blu-ray disc I turn on the Blu-ray player and expect it to turn on the tv. Well that's how it works on my 2016 tv without a hitch. However what I am going through can only be described as hell. The Sky HD box[hdmi 1] does not appear on the Bravia sync list and when I turn on the box I get the apple tv. The retailer has turned off tv control on the Apple tv and quite often when I choose the apple tv from the input list I get nothing but a screen best described as snowy. I have to turn the tv off and then turn off the power to be able to use my Apple Tv. Sometimes the blu-ray player tray ejects and reloads while I'm watching tv or the apple tv. Sometimes I get no sound when I use YouTube or when I return to live tv. To rectify this I have to turn the tv off and therefore the sound bar and then turn it back on. I did not have a soundbar with my Sony 2016 tv and all seemed to work as I expected. The retailer intends to replace the tv and my cables this Saturday and I will wait to see the results. I should say he has already replaced the soundbar.  He has got it into his head that the problem lies with the Apple tv 4k which I doubt. It performed quite happily with my 2016 tv. I have never had LG or Samsung kit before being loyal to Sony but this is totally unacceptable. Has anyone had issues like this and if they have had how were they resolved?

Disconnect the mysky and probably you'll find out that everything is working

Thanks for your reply. I don't really understand what you mean by 'mysky'. The Sky box is not the Q but simply an HD box. The retailer replaced the TV yesterday but failed to bring his HDMI cables. He has disconnected the apple tv 4k and after 24 hours things seem to be better. The Sky HD box appears on the input list when I am using it and disappears when I am not which I find surprising. I do still have issues with sound when accessing YouTube. Yesterday I had to turn the tv off and on twice to get sound on Youtube. Sometimes when I hit the home button on the remote and access YouTube I get sound othertimes I don't. However I assume that this is nothing to do with hdmi control but the Android operating system which lets face it is awful. One other annoying thing is that when I turn on the tv for the first time during the day I have to press the power or tv button on the remote several times before the tv starts up.

Since the tv has been replaced can I assume that HDMI ports are controlled through the tv. What I am asking does the Tv do all the work?

You are probably correct about sky and cec. However, I didn't have a problem on my 2016 Sony tv which had two hdmi inputs. The sky box was on the first and the apple tv on the second. Needless to say I didn't have a soundbar. The retailer is convinced that the problems are caused by either the cables I am using or my Apple tv 4k. I don't know enough about it to make a judgement.

The tv was replaced last Saturday and the retailer has disconnected the Apple tv 4k. It does seem to be better. I can access my sky box and so far when I use my blu-ray I get sound on returning to tv. However what I have noticed is that the picture quality on this tv is much better than the previous one. Of course the proof will come when I reconnect the apple tv using his cables which he forgot to bring. I have issues with the sound coming from the soundbar when I play blu-ray movies since it is nothing like surround sound. While I don't expect sound from a soundbar costing less than £500 to be equivalent to say a £10000 audio system I would expect better than what I am getting.  Indeed I get better sound from it on YouTube. Now that I've got the picture quailty I expect the sound to go with it.

Hi jwm007,

Can you try to connect the Blu-ray player to the TV directly rather than via the soundbar? Also, do you have issue with the sound when playing other sources than the Blu-ray player?

Hi

Thanks for your reply.

When I had the tv and soundbar installed initially I had the Blu-ray player
attached to HDMI 1 thinking that the player wouldn't require an enhanced
port. To be honest it wasn't any better than it is now. I took out a
subscription to Netflix and as you are probably aware certain films are
streamed in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos though I cannot say I have noticed
Atmos at all or any kind of surround. It is confusing to say the least that
when you are playing a Blu-ray disc with Dolby Atmos that when you hit the
display button on the Blu-ray remote you grt Dolby True-HD 7.1, on the TV
Dolby Digital and finally on the display button of the soundbar remote
control as Dolby Atmos. Last night I watched the Black Panther 4k movie (not
recommended) and the tv's InfoBar displayed stereo but on the soundbar Dolby
Atmos. Anyway all I was listening was improved sound and none of the bangs I
expected and no trace of any kind of surround.

I did contact Sony Support concerning my understanding of how the sound
set-up worked. To get Dolby Atmos or any kind of surround must the source
(Blu-ray) be connected to the soundbar and not the Tv's HDMI ports? I must
confess I was even more confused by the reply. At least the Sound bar remote
actions such as "VERTICAL" appear on screen though pressing it "ON" does
very little in terms of actual sound other than increase the volume. The
audio settings on the Blu-ray player and soundbar are the default settings.

Hi jwm007,

Just to summarise then, the main issue you're having with your setup at the moment is that you're unable to get 7.1.2 Dolby Atmos surround sound or no surround sound in general?
