Cannot adjust sound level when playing DVD

Have just bought a Sont DVD Player (SR170) and cannot adjust the sound level at all, either by using the DVD remote or the TV remote.  Just playing continuously at full blast -- far too loud.  Is there a set-up issue?  How do I sort it out?

Its been a year since your post (well almost), and you have probably solved it by now.  But it is curious on why you couldnt adjust the volume on the TV either?  Batteries in the remotes?  The something blocking the IR sensor?

Curious to know what the resolution was?
