Hi people,
I bought a cheap (not working) DHC-MD313 system. There were a number of problems to be addressed, some of which I have resolved ; 1) the CD was making a grinding noise but I fixed with a good laser cleaning and mechanism greasing - it now works perfectly. 2) The Minidisc is probably a lost cause as it has clearly been used as a 'donor board with the flat flex cable and it's connector removed so probably not fixable (I have a plan to attempt a fix but may well fail). The radio works well.
Despite the minidisc issue, I am fine with the unit just running the CD and radio (if all else fails) BUT my issue now is that the fan is not spinning. User & service manuals suggest that the fan should always be running? (rather than temperature controlled) and I would be grateful if any users of this system could confirm. If it should always be running, I'm surprised that self-diagnosis has not flashed up an error but I will have to investigate the problem.
Thanks in advance to anyone who is able to give any thoughts on this issue.
After my rambling opening post, just wanted to clarify my question:
Should the fan on Sony DHC-MD313 be running all the time when powered on or only when temperature reaches a certain level ?
Thanks in anticipation.
I don't own this myself, but I don't think it should always be running.
Have you tried reaching to the Sony reps or engineers for some info? I believe that would be your best shot (other than waiting for someone who still owns one to reply of course).
Hope this helps!

Thanks for your response JD. I'm glad you have the same view that the fan should not constantly be running and appreciate that you cannot be sure when you have not owned the model. I haven't tried reaching to the Sony reps or engineers. To be honest, I wouldn't know how to contact an appropriate source and I strongly doubt, in any case that there would be any interest in assisting with such an old device as this.
I have continued test running the (now working) CD and radio sections without any issue so far. The block diagram in the Service Manual shows a 'temperature sensor' which also seems to indicate that the fan should be temperature controlled rather than running constantly. I guess I'll have to hope that a past or current owner of this model stumbles by the thread to verify. Thanks again for replying.
