I bought a new TV last week, how do I get 5.1 sound from old NR1403 marantz AVR.
I connected TV to AVR using the Arc HDMI ports. I can only get audio using PCM output setting on TV,but this is only 2.1.
If I select Auto 1 or 2 it's just distorted noise. Is this due to age of my AVR or is 5.1 only possible via Optical not HDMI?
I am getting around this currently by watching Netflix via my Sony UHD Player and using the Audio out HDMI to AVR and other HDMI for the Picture. I'd rather be able to just use the TV apps than UHD player. Any advice gratefully received

Hi @NickBrice Does your Receiver support the Dolby Digital Plus being outputted by Netflix. It certainly needs a high speed HDMI cable. Optical doesn’t support DD+ so l’m wondering if the TV is downgrading the audio to 2.0 on HDMI because the Receiver doesn’t support DD+. Just guessing.
Yes I get DD+ from UHD Player hooked up to AVR, I should add it's not just Netflix it's the same with the Amazon App on the TV I only get 2.0 via HDMI.
I can get around these issues, but ultimately I want to be able to just use TV for these apps instead of booting up the UHD Player or running an Optical lead.
If my new HDMI cables fix this issue I'll let you know. Thanks for all your advice
If the hdmi cable between the tv arc and avr works when the audio is from the app on the blu ray player then that implies that the hdmi cable is OK, as is the avr decoding. Have you checked the sound settings via the action menu when in the netflix and prime app?
If I get the chance later I'll check my tv sound settings and app sound settings
Hi thanks for all your help and pointing me in the right direction. I've changed the output from Dolby Digital Plus to Dolby Digital when using the Action Menu settings, now I have 5.1
I've had DD+ display in the past when watching blu rays, but I'm not going to concern myself with that. I'm a happy customer
hey guys..
i cannot passthrough the DDP sound to my AVR over ARC or Optical Cable..AVR shows DD5.1..if i use the interface ( Laptop or AndroidBox) i can do it.. i changed the DDP sound output from "Dolby Digital to DDP" or from "DDP to DD" but nothing changed.. as we know this device supported DDP sound.. but i cannot pass it..i tried native video player or 3rd party plaeyers.. no succes.. any idea..?
hey again..
my android version is Nougat.. and i have 3 hdmi cables one of them is new one (new is connected between TV and AVR) and if i use the old one between android box to AVR it passes the DDP sound..there is no pb..TV passes to DD5.1 and DTS5.1 sounds but not DDPlus..
hey again..
ARC supports DD+..? i cannot pass DD+ because of ARC doesnt support it.? ( From TV to AVR )
What are you watching when you get no sound eg netflix app?
thanx for ur reply..
the pb is not "no sound" when playing DD+..pb is AVR is downgrading (to DD5.1) or not decoding (it is Supported DD+ ) when plays any DD+ content ..netflix or players (kodi archos or native player)..

if i play this movie directly (from TV ARC to AVR ARC) from native player,Archos Player or Kodi, AVR shows DD5.1..
if i play this movie from Laptop or AndroidBox ( TV connected to AVR with ARC and from Laptop to AVR with HDMI port ) AVR shows DDP5.1..
I see DD+ from Disney, netflix, prime etc. via Arc to my marantz
