Hi, I’m wondering if anyone can help me regarding the firmware update on the Sony a7iii as since I’ve done the update my camera is playing up saying ‘this function is not available’ when I’ve not changed a setting. It feels kind of slow and the focus is not great. I also updated the firmware on my brand new 70/200 f2.8 mark ii lens and I’m not sure if that’s part of the problem.
Has anyone had any issues and how did you solve them?
I’d be very grateful for any help as I’m shooting at my first gig on the 20th.
thanks
Linda
Hi, thanks for answering my query.
I’m not getting any error messages now but I’m not happy with the focusing on the 70/200 Fe2.8 M2 lens.
I’ve done some comparisons with another lens on the same camera and I’m getting better results with the other lens!! I’ve also put both lenses on my a6500. I’m now feeling it’s the 70/200 fe2.8 lens thats not quite right!
I have been in touch with Sony who want more details but I am also going to the retailer I bought the lens from tomorrow who are going to have a look at it and test it and my camera.
I will post what happens.

Have you considered the possibility that you have a bad setting on your lens? For example, if you have actived the FULL TIME DMF, you can interact and conduct the AF system to a bad performance.
Just make some test whith different settings, and (to test the maximun speed) be sure to open the apertura to the max value (f/2.8).

Great, that's the best way.
Hi, Thank you all for helping me with my problem. I have taken the advice from Sony in taking the battery out, leaving it for a minute or so, replacing battery and then taking it back to factory settings.
I’ve also checked if my DMF button was on or off and it was off.
I’ve been to the retailer (Wex photo&video) and had them check the lens and camera and all seems to be ok now.
I have a concert I’m photographing on Saturday so hopefully all will be well. They have said to let them know if not I really appreciate all the help. Thank you.
Great!
At the end which was the setting that make you crazy?
Hi, I don’t think it was any particular setting, it was more that I’d fallen down a rabbit hole and started doubting everything eg what menus I’d been in, what I’d pressed, not being able to work it out for myself, especially as I’ve had my a7iii for 18 months!
The lens is brand new so I’ve got to get used to it and its capabilities so I’m looking forward to that.
Im very grateful for this community and the help I’ve had. I’m sure I’ll be back 😊

👏
Glad to know that it's working now!
I know it's easy to fall into that rabbit hole especially if you're using the camera with different lenses and settings, and maybe throw in a couple of accessories extra and something goes wrong and you don't know which setting is affecting it! it's a needle in a haystack kinda situation.
Glad you found yours though, next time try to test it right away with different lenses if you can to narrow down the possibilities, cheers mate.
Hi, yes it’s a nightmare in that rabbit hole! I’m still finding my way out of it, The camera is fine as I’ve used my other lenses on it. I think I just need to get used to the new lens. It could just be me but I focus on say a birds eye, I use centre spot for this, I wait until the bird is still and then take a few photos on continuous shooting just in case it moves. I then preview the photo in-camera to make sure it’s fine. However when I press to preview the bird (and its eye) the bird is off to the left therefore not in the focus area and not sharp. Does that make sense?
I am persevering as the 70/200 f2.8 Mark 2 is getting amazing reviews. I realise other settings come into the equation but once you lose confidence in what you’re doing it’s hard to come back from that, so it could just be me!
Anyway, you are right, re testing things and in future this is the first thing I will do but it was after I updated the firmware on both lens and camera that I fell down the said rabbit hole!
Thank you for responding to my problem.
You may even share some of your pictures for us to check it with you.
And even if there's nothing wrong with them, there's no harm in checking some amazing bird shots 😂.
Hi, sorry for the delay getting back to you but I’ve been at a festival since Thursday. I took my lens with me and it worked a treat. What I did was I put it on Auto to start with and then checked all the settings that used and then went onto manual. I got some amazing photos of the bands and I’ve even been asked by one band if they could use the photos!
I can send you photos of birds if you like😂
But here’s some from the festival!
pin the end it was the operator that was the problem 🤦♀️🤷🏼♀️
