Xperia 5ii overheating and poor Geekbench score.

Hi all,

I bought a brand new Xperia 5ii at the end of December and although I love the phone I'm having some heating issues. It occasionally gets very hot, as in I notice it very hot in my hand and can feel the heat through the official Sony Bumper case I use. This seems to fairly random but I'm not doing anything overly extensive. I don't play any games and have the usual Google and streaming apps. Has anyone else had similar issues?

Sometimes it even gets hot just using Google Chrome browsing websites. Other times it seems totally fine. I wish I could re-create the conditions it gets hot but I can't.

I've now installed a CPU monitor so I can monitor the results more precisely. It seems to regularly go over 45° just browsing, even while typing this.

Furthermore I thought I would do the Geekbench score to see if it is operating normally. My results were way lower than some videos online/websites online. General the results seem to be around 900 single core and around 3000 multi core. My results are 674 single and 1906 which is way down and worse than the previous Xperia 5.

I'm starting to think I have a faulty phone or it's not all its hyped up to be, I know rouge apps not behaving normally can cause issues but can't see what that could be. I normally keep my phone's for 3-4 years so having these issues after less than 2 months is very worrying.

Thought I would see what others users experiences are before I return it or contacts Sony.

How is it in safe mode?

Maybe there are apps that consumer or stress the operating system.

In safe mode self installed apps are not loaded.

Test and tell.

If you still have the same issue in safe mode , you can try to do a software repair and test again. be careful if the heat is very high that you can't touch the device or it could hurt you, you'll need to contact Sony for this

Just thought I'd update you on the situation.

So eventually I used Sony companion to repair my phone, basically, a factory reset I guess.

That temporarily fixed the problem; on the Geekbench tests I was getting the high multi-core and single core-core you would expect for the processor. Then I tried to do slowly install apps and see what happened. The high Geekbecnh score stayed for a while but then eventually went but I couldn't find out what was causing it. As soon as I got the low Geekbench score I uninstalled the last apps I had installed but it stayed low. To cut a long story short I couldn't find anything consistent that caused the low score. Sometimes I got the phone to a state where it would give me a high score but then it would go and even if I uninstalled even more apps it would stay low. At one point I had lots of apps installed and was getting a high score but again eventually it went.

At one point I got to the point where I was getting a high score so decided to give up for a while. All that evening I was getting the high score; went to bed; first thing in the morning I got the high score but about an hour later I got a low score; I didn't install any new apps or anything.

Eventually, I decided to give up and just install the apps I use anywhere. The strange thing is I very occasionally will get the High Geekbench score but generally speaking it is the low score. I really don't know what is going on; I'm not sure if it is actually the Geekbench app not testing the phone properly or some power management feature sony has built into their Android version.

Bit annoyed but not much I can do much about it as I'm not confident Sony Support would do anything to help me. I mean it's good news that I was consistently getting the high Geekbench score; so probably not a hardware problem, but doesn't fill me with confidence in the phone...

I wish I could find more users with the same phone to see what scores they were getting but obviously, sony phones aren't hugely popular so not many people out there I could ask.

If anyone on this forum has the 5ii I would be very interested to see what sort of Geekbench scores you get.

Second question: Do you like your device?

I mean you can measure whatever you like, there are battery tests as well and other kind of tests.

The simple thing is: is it lagging, is it malfunctioning, are you happy with it.

I'm replying to this thread because I too am having Xperia 5ii overheating issues and I contacted Sony Support and they said (after trying the phone in Safe Mode) to do a software repair.

I'm really annoyed about this because I need my phone for making videos at work, on construction sites and am appalled that I paid £850 for a phone that overheats when making videos.  My videos are only around 4 minutes long, they're not even 4K and neither am in in hot conditions/environments.  

I'm not a gamer, not trying anything special which my 5 year old Samsung wasn't able to do.

This is ridiculous and the last time I'm buying a Sony phone which is a shame because the stills camera is the best.

Did you try to give the software repair by the Xperia companion a shot? it usually solved the overheating issues if it's not something that major to harm the device.

I have the same kind of problem. I contacted Sony Customer service about this. They said to first use Safe mode to find the app that is over heating the system, No help. They said to remove and delete all unused apps and documents from memory, No help. They said light reset the device, No help. They said restore factory settings, haven´t done it yet. My problem basically is that the over heating starts when the screen is on. When the screen is off the phone cools down. Also the Sony news app uses lots of battery life.

You can try the software repair by the Xperia companion . Just make sure to backup your data first

If the software repair did not solve the issue, you will need to send it for repair as long as the heat is not that dangerous and the temperature decreases when you power off the screen.
