I had a similar problem. My phone was upgraded to Oreo from the box, and the finger print scanner worked at first but over time began to malfunction, and eventually stopped. I installed the Xperia software and performed a system restoration on the device which has fixed it for now.

If you are willing to start over, a system restoration ought to fix the problem for you, too.
