Useless Sony batteries

The battery on my Vaio notebook now lasts five minutes and while still showing 82% unused crashes even before the recorded announcement of low battery is completed. Is there any way of reviving batteries?

Time to buy a new battery I think.....

My old X9 showed that the battery had only done about 190 charge cycles but was dead after a few seconds when turning off the mains supply

The number of charge cycles shown is the number of FULL charge cycles (from empty to full). It does not register the number of partial charges.

Do The Batteries have a memory effect

Lithium Ion batteries should not have a memory effect, but that does not give them an infinate lifespan.

Steve's right, you need a new battery.
But if you're in your 12months of warranty, I'd speak to sony before laying out £80+

I think that you will find that batteries are only warranted for 90 days.......

How do you see the number of cycles a batteries gone through?

On some systems, (like my old X9) when you look at the power profiles you can also look at the battery status, This will give you the current charge level. If there is a "ADVANCED" button, this will show you details about your battery, like the number of charge cycles, battery type, etc...

Hello everyone,

I read an article on notebook battery life("SVM" french magazine March 2004). They said every nobetook battery have 2 year to live.
Theire advert is :

Buy quickly as possible a new battery because later Sony battery price will be more expensive because our notebook will be older.

Sony, could you comfirm this information ?

Thank you

what i was told about batteries to increase their life:

1) Rechargeble battries are suposed to keep at least 85% of their capacity after 1 year of use. In fact we should talk about Cycles.
2) Li-On and Li-Polymer batteries do not have a memory effect, but have less cycles of life. (Most of the Laptop batteries are actually Li-On).
3) If you want to keep your battery for a long time, you should take care of it:
- Do Not Use when its not needed (and keep it charged)!
- Many people keep their battery constantly in their laptop, event if they are working on their desk with a power supply. If you use a power supply, you should un-mount your battery as soon as it is 100% charged, and keep it in a "safe" place (around 25°C).
- When you want to use your laptop on travelling, mount your battery again in your laptop.
- If you do not use your laptop while traveling very often, remember to recharge your battery once a month, because batteries have a "self discharge" rate.

I you want to have more autonomy you can of course:
- lower the brightness of the sreen
- Avoid use of CD/DVD and even your Hard dive (don't think that watching a movie on HD use less power than on DVD...)
- Buy a Centrino.....

See you
