Unstable touchpad when charging?

My touchpad on the N31Z works fine when using battery power but is erratic and unstable when the AC power is connected. I have read that the touchpad uses a tiny amount of electricity to detect body movement over it and am wondering if there is some sort of overload or malfunction taking place? I have searched for driver updates and no luck.

Any advice much appreciated,

Thanks.

...just to add that I have tried removing the battery and running off AC power. The problem disappears - so it is only when charging the battery that I have this problem.

Any advice or people experiencing a similar problem?

Cheers

Hi pringe83

Has your touchpad always behaved like this when using AC power.?

Hi Thalamus, yes I think it has always behaved strangely on occasions, but after reading on this forum about VAIO's support and the length of time without laptop whilst it's sent away for repair I decided to put up with it! It's only recently as I have begun to use it more and more without an external mouse that I've realised exactly when it malfunctions.

Any suggestions? Have you heard of this before?

Hi pringe83,

No I don't recall anything being mentioned before, it sounds hardware related to me.. :slight_frown:

But try this..

Press the windows key+R to open the Run box type devmgmt.msc and press OK

Click Continue on the User Account Control window.

Is there a pointing device or PS2 mouse listed..?

If you do not have a pointing device listed, then right click once on PS2 mouse and select Update Driver Software.

Select Browse my computer for driver software, then Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer

If 'Alps Pointing-device' (possibly Alps Pointing-device for Vaio) appears in the new window, select it and click next.. (if the 'Alps Pointing-device' does not appear in the list remove the tick from 'Show Compatible Hardware' and select Alps Electric from the Manufacturer column then 'Alps Pointing-device' (possibly Alps Pointing-device for Vaio) from the model column and then click next.

Follow the on screen instructions to finish..
