Realtek Sound Card Problem

Dear all,
I've got a problem with my sound card and wondered if you could spare a moment and help me out.
The problem is that while playing a music or a video clip, the sound frequently freezes for a second, i.e. still playing that particular tone, and then it continues normally. Meanwhile the CPU usage shots up.
If I execute sth while playing, this happens more frequently.
My system:
Sony VAIO laptop VGN-FS285H - Pentium M Centrino 1.73 GHz - Realtek High Def. Sound card -WinXP-Pro-SP2

I have installed/reinstalled:
- Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for high Definition Audio (Tried both
KB835221 and the newer KB888111)
- Realtek High Definition Audio Driver
- Latest DirectX

But the problem still persists. Any ideas?

PS: I also have WinXP-Home and FC5 installed in my computer; both of them are OK.

Hello there

Thanks for all the suggestions, here are a few of my findings...

When I play music from the hard drive say, Sonic Stage or Realplayer the stuttering only occurs in the first minute, (as the hard drive busy light flashes) then it starts to settle down, so long as I dont start working in other programs. Stuttering does also occur when playing music direct from the CD drive.

Re: ddf's comment on game playing, I gave up on trying to play age of empires 3, put the problems down to needing more memory, I'm on 504Mb. When your at full on war at sea it freezes so much that you're ships are blown to bits before you can even scroll to find them on screen. So much for Microsoft... maybe I should just get an ibook!

Re: DMA, I initially looked in Direct Memory Access Controller...it says no drivers installed...is this right?

In Primary IDE Channels
Under current transfer modes I have...
Device 0 - PIO mode
Device 1 - Ultra DMA mode 2

Anyway I'm going to have a look at this website you are both talking about.

btw i just found on windows a fix KB920918 that seems pretty much related to the matter. Just a pity one have to contact them to get the file!

I maybe able to get you a link to download that file i think my freind had to ring for about six fixes im wondering if he may have it on his server. I'll Email him & check for you.

Has it set your Device 0 to a DMA Mode?

to start with, Blencogo you are a king. If i was in your neighbourhood you would get a massive round of beers for the help! Or whatever you drink. And Resonate you would be greatly welcome for your efforts also!

Problem is gone. Sound perfect, overall performance of the laptop are now amazing. Startup in 3 and a half seconds. Or well at least performances are back to what they are supposed to be for what i paid!

The resolution was very simple: i just desintalled the drivers of the Primary IDE, and rebooted. No hotfix no nothing.

I was chocked in the reboot to see the Welcome page after just a few seconds, and a few seconds more, i was into Windows! DVD got automatically reinstalled also in the reboot.
I have Device 0 at DMA level 5, and Device 1 at DMA level 2. I'll call it a go!

Even WMP11 is working as a charm, so i give it a chance

Blencogo i think you should apply to sony see if you can join there support staff lol you could make loads. you did it ten times as quick & even without sending it to the labs
