What I do is to have the computer running at constant low speeds when I'm reading news, e-mail, writing documents, watching movies, or any other cpu less intensive tasks - programs which don't use constantly the CPU -. Centrino's technology responds very well at speeds of 600-800 Mhz to this tasks, and you won't notice the differenece. This have the obvious advantage too of having less noise! For continous use of the CPU - rendering, compiling... - I turn it to adaptive and to maximum speeds. I suggest you to know the range of frequencies you have in your computer with each "level of control" under the vaio power management using mobile meter.
