Now just like a lot of Vaio FE11S users I had the clicking sound where my hardisk is. People who suggest it is the hardisk working, please save me the trouble of telling 100 times it is not the harddisk working sound. I had enough laptops to know the difference.
DOWNLOAD CLICKING SOUND
Now what I would like to know is if there has been anyone who send his/her laptop to Sony back to let them check it out. If yes, I ofcourse would really like to know what sony told you or what you did eventually. It seems to me nobody knows the solution. I did call sony and told them everything about the problem. They said it was something wich is new to them. I gave them the club-vaio link where people posted about the same problem. This coming week I am going to send my laptop to sony, this clicking sound disturbs me a lot.
I know that there are previous threads about this Old thread about clicking sound link , but I wanted to post a sequal where people could post their experience and opinion. Please don't suggest me to open up my harddisk or laptop, and once again it is NOT the harddisk working sound.
What happens: "The hard disk makes irregularly a clicking sound which is pretty loud two. Most certainly is not a working sound. It sounds like something is hitting the plastic of the laptop or something else. When I shut down my laptop and restart the sound is gone for a while." I personally think it has something to do with the reading arm. The clicking sound appears always when the laptop is not working. It's like when the harddisk is not working it cant get into the resting position, and keep on trying. I hope sony is going to spend serious time on this problem, especially it seems to be a common problem.
Important suggestions and remarks of others:
hard drive is made by fujitsu & they have a diagnostic software tool on the fujitsu web site & when i ran it, the program said no hard drive found on laptop, i spoke to fujitsu & they said i should wait for later version of software to come out, which i will do! anyone who goes to fujitsu web site, the version i tryed is 6.40
This is the response I have received from Fujitsu regarding the issue: We connected this drive MHV2160BT to our analyser and installed Windows XP Pro, we did not hear any obvious clicking noise unless you place your ear next to the drive so it is very quiet even though this does go into sleep mode at around every 4-10 seconds (idle). I would investigate if you can further into the specifications and configurations fitting of your Sony Laptop.
Fabulous spinstorm.
ok, giving my clicking update which I haven't given yet.
It's been just over a week now and no clickidy clicks!
awooohoo!
Yeah but do you really want to keep rebooting, specially if you're working hard?
But its only happened twice once when I first got it and last week - it is not a common occurance - if it was it would go right back to Sony now, that was my point while it is not common I wanna keep a hold of it!
hi all i have as the most of us the same clicking sound coming from the hd.after reading this post i contacted sony vaio center and spoke to a techinician that told me this is customary and its not a problem.i told him about this post and that i wanted to get it serviced as its still in warranty but he didnt want to go on with it.am in greece and the service line is in holland.hope u have a ny suggestions for my case
Spinstorm, I went through a period where my hdd was making this noise every 10 seconds or so and it was getting infuriating, but after not using it for a couple of days I'm now only getting a click occasionally which is much more bareable.
I'm thinking that if sony are going to format the hdd upon return anyway, then i might as well ride it out until it packs up. I'm trying to remember to make regular back ups, but I guess it's a bit of a risky strategy.
If it is purely an hdd fault, then I'd hope that there wasn't any risk to any part of the laptop and so sticking it out can't make things worse!
Did that make sense?

Can you use your warrenty in Greece....Were did you actually buy your laptop? In holland? Need more information.
Sony CANNOT refuse to take up the issue. Sony even admitted there is a problem with the FE11S see the post underneath this one. Sony is lying to you, when I called Sony I prepared myself perfectly. I recorded the clicking sound and explained them precisely what my problem was. I had enough laptops to know the diffrence. By the way Sony HAS to take a look at your laptop, the people on the phone are not technishens, they have very limited knowledge. Don't let them tell you what to do tell THEM what to do.

Sony finally got round to contacting me today. The guy I spoke to has actually acknowledged that there is a problem with the FE11S. He says that their engineers are working on a resolution. They, like us, seem to think it's the HD but there's no point in just replacing it until they find out what's actually causing it to act this way since it could be the motherboard, connections, in fact any number of things. I can see his point - I'd prefer they investigate then come up with a solution rather than constantly having a shot in the dark, giving this and that a go. When the engineers find the source of the problem he'll get back to me and let me know what they'll do to put it right.
Hang in there guys - there could be light at the end of the tunnel on this issue. I'll post again when I find out more.
