Will SONY stand behind their brand/Bravia TV after total failure after 16 months ?

Sony Support appointed local repairers advise me that after 16 months of use a Sony TV is beyond economic repair as the power unit has failed and the design of Sony Bravia TV's is so poor that this is linked to the main LCD board and therefore the whole LCD main board needs to be replaced at a cost of £888.Model no KDL-46HX853 cost £1000 16 months ago - 12 month warranty ran out.

I have complained  to Sony and so far - no repy. Is it too much to expect a TV to last longer than 16 months, and for SOny to stand behind their TV's in some way ?

I have the same problem and it's a kdl 46ex723 18 months from new panel needs replacing and no sign of sony wanting to help I see a theme forming here
