Unable to watch video on the TV

My son put a TV series onto one of my external hard drives which I connected to the TV with a USB lead.When I tried to watch the the series I got this message Unsupported content.When I plug the hard drive into my laptop it says it is in VLC format do I delete for not being playable or is there a way to play it on the TV.The TV is a Sony  KDL-42W653A.Any help appreciated.

If not, the videos need to be converted to a format that is supported
