Our TV (KDL46ex701) cannot find the external hard drive (Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex STAA250200) when linked via USB. The hard drive supports connection via TV, but the TV does not respond at all to this.
Question no 1: Does the TV support hard drives (it should work as it responds to a USB memory stick)?
Question no 2: How do we make it work?

Hi there
If you are trying to get the recordings off the HDD onto a PC - you cant (you can "see" the HDD via Linux though). However, if you want to reclaim that HDD back, it needs to be reformatted
Cheers
EDIT: Found this older thread, might be good for a read:
hi folks
i have a Sony Bravia KDL43W809CBU i purchased this tv because it was (A) Made By Sony And (B) the salesman at currys pc world assured me that you can connect a 500GB hard drive for recording tv well i have had this tv for two months now and have tried a 500GB also a 1TB harddrive but still unable to record the tv tells me the tv should be off before removing the harddrive ?? but thats as far as it goes so it knows its their it just does nothing i love the tv but this is becoming a joke now i got a system firmware the other week after it finished i could see no differance
if you go to pc world they just look at you blank so its obvious that their is a problem they cant sort out i will give it untill the end of this month and if i am not furnished a reasonable answer i willl be demanding my mony back as their is an inherant fault and according too consumer rights i can do this as the tv does not work as advertized i really dont want too do this as i love this tv but if needs must this is the action i must take
PS
i have tried NTFS & FAT32 On 500GB and 1TB usb western digital usb 3.0 drives both new at christmas
more i cannot do

Thanks re the above
yes the hdd is plugged into the correct usb i have crawled all over the settings pages cant find anywhere to reg the hard drive the tv says to make sure the tv is switched off before disconecting so it does know its their i have no options to register it in ant setings page i can see thanks for the reply i have now tried a verbatium a seagate and a western digital all 500gb all formatted to FAT23 as per recomendations i am now out of ideas
Hi there
I think i know why you do not have the options to Register HDD. Do you have YouView active by any chance? If so, this will need to be disabled as you cannot use HDD Recording in YouView Mode.
To disable YouView
Cheers
Success!
Check the following.
HDD is at least 100 GB
HDD is formatted only with FAT32
HDD's first partition is the only one that will be recognised. Extra partitions are not required.
Then check your Sony Bravia's USB sockets.
One (nearest screen) is labelled HDD REC. Use this one. The other USB socket will not power your HDD.
Then go to Settings | System Settings | Set-up | Recording Set-up | HDD Registration
I am having a similar problem. I had an external hard drive on my Sony kdl 42 w653 a tv. I started having problems when setting it for timer record, It wouldn't switch on. Recording manually was fine though. I made the mistake of contacting sony who told me to back up
the information on the hard drive to a pc and then re format the hard drive on the tv and then copy the files back to it. I did this but it said no hard drive was connected. I bought a new hard drive and tried that to see what happened and it worked fine. So i tried to copy the files off the new hard drive and re format it to see what happened. When i copied the files back to the hard drive. Now it also says no hard drive connected. After re formatting it and copying the files back again it says no recordings on hard drive. I think could be something to do with the encryption. If so why did they tell me back the information up to a pc when they must have known that after that it wouldn't be able to be accessed by the tv?
Hi zoonie1, I think this isn't related to the TV, what formats did you try?
thanks. I was told by sony to format the hard drive fat 32
Did formatting it to FAT32 solve it for you, or do you still face the same issue?
