Xperia play off button issues?

hello i have an xperia play which is having issues based on the screen on and off button. 
i know that if i press it for a long time 3-5 seconds it will open the menu to turn off the phone, restart it or take a screen shot. 

but normally when i click it quickly it supposed to just turn the screen off. but it wont let me. it just opens the long press menu. 

can someone please explain this issue for me?

Hi @ainsleydan, sorry to hear about this.

This will be very tricky to assist with as the Xperia Play has reached it's end of support and documention, software updates and spare parts are no longer available, which limits what I can suggest you trying.

You can try and perform a factory reset to see if anything in the software is the cause of this, but there could also be a unexpected behaviour with the power button.
