Wired connection and airplay

Looking at purchasing a Sony STR-DN1080 av receiver and had a query about how airplay and wired connection works.  If I connect the receiver to the router (via a switch) can I use airplay if not connecting the receiver via wifi or is airplay only wifi to the receiver or does somehow the receiver show up as an airplay device with a wired connection ?  If the av receiver is connected by cable I presume the wifi on the receiver is off and doesn't hunt for networks - as quite often have the wifi off (long story !) ?  In UK so would be Europe model.

Great choice of amp, Bravia TVs now seem to refuse WiFi if there is a lan connection,but my amp does not mind,can switch between both, airplay is fine in theory but depends on good WiFi so you may have poor picture………
