Searching for a bit of advice, my STR-DN1080 amp decided in December ‘21 for the LCD display to start working intermittently, which I could just about live with, but now, well it was early January, it has decided to not work at all unless you put pressure on the front of the amp generally above the screen but doesn’t illuminate for long before going off again. I’ve tried all the factory resets / settings & it’s running on the latest update. To add insult to injury the warranty is out of date so tried contacting the local Sony repair shop but they must be busy as no one replies (email & phone) although if the reviews are to be believed this is the type of service to expect from this Sony approved repair shop. I’m guessing Sony know about this problem, quick search suggests its a solder issue as it seems to happen to a lot of these Sony amps but I’m guessing they’ll give me the usual corporate brush off.
So basically at just over 2 years old do I……
A. Chuck it in the bin (obviously one that can recycle the precious metals inside)
B. Attempt a repair myself, not a clue where to start on this one is it even possible?
C. Bin off Sony & spend my hard earned money on another corporate monster who make products that last longer than the heap of junk i was sold!
D. Sensible suggestions very welcome!
Any advice appreciated.
Hey there,
Based on what you said it seems that there's a cable loose from the inside, since it can come on by pressuring the LCD screen ''don't do that a lot though so you won't damage it''.
At this point it seems that the unit might need to be looked at by an engineer, and you can find a list of Sony certified engineers through that link, just make sure to choose the correct filer, and add your post code then search: https://locator.sony/en_GB/servicecenters/?link-header
Hope it helps!
