Hi All, I am relatively new and need you expert help, firstly, my setup is a Sony bdv 7100w to an LG (yeah I know) TV, now, I have just got rid of Sky, and I am watching freeview off my tv with the sound coming through my system, LG told me that if I wanted to record off freeview then I would need to buy a USB external hard drive(which I did) but they didn’t tell me that it will only record the channel you are watching, so that was pointless and I sent it back, I need a box ( been recommended Humax with Youview) to record one prog whilst watching another, sounded ok I thought, just what I wanted, anyway someone told me that my old Sky+ dish could be connected to either my surround system or my tv and I would get Freesat, but I still need a box to record at least two progs, so could one of you guys correct any mistakes ie Sky cables (from Sky+ dish) to tv or my system, is it possible? and is it worth it? Finally if you are still conscious!! What would you do in my shoes? steady guys!! sensible answers please. Kind regards muvoda.

Hi, @LightFoot I got a reply off several people saying that you do NOT need a contract to use the BT box, all you need to do is plug in the aerial and you are ready to go, so I would receiveyouview through my aerial/box, and also record what I like, so thank you all for all your responses, I think thats the way I will go, take it easy guys and thanks again. Regards muvoda.
Hi @muvoda
I believe in horses for courses. TVs are good for watching and streaming pictures and PVRs are good for recording and scheduling programmes to record. I wouldn’t hesitate in buying a Humax YouView/Freeview PVR. Note your Sky+ satellite dish connected to your TV is not Freesat (as I was corrected once). It doesn’t give you the Freesat EPG. You cannot connect it to a surround system as very unlikely it will have a DVB-S/S2 tuner built in!
Edit: Sorry LG TV, I was thinking Sony so I don’t know if it has Freesat built in.
Hi, and thanks for your quick response, ok then, I will definitely invest in a Humax and forget about everthing else, my tv(LG) does have Freeview, I am watching it now after getting rid of sky, and one more thing, I was checking out Humax and what association does Humax have with BT? I have seen numerous Humax boxes with the words BT emblazoned on them, are they for real or not? Regards muvoda.

Hi @muvoda I am assuming you mean 2nd hand boxes. These were supplied free of charge to people subscribing to BT TV or other providers like TalkTalk. These should still work but obviously you won’t get the extra subscription channels. They rebrand themselves automatically when connected to a TV provider broadband. Note Humax do Freesat boxes as well as YouView/Freeview boxes so you could connect your Sky+ dish and use that.
Hi, really not sure if they are second hand or not, you maybe correct, if you have a look on a certain auction website, they are selling new and unused so called 'BT Humax UHD 1TB' boxes with the BT emblazoned on the front off the box, I will stay clear of them and purchase a Humax box off the official Humax website. I would like to buy a UHD Humax box but they are too pricey, thats when I came across these other boxes that WERE in my price range, but Im not so sure if they are genuine or not. Anyway thanks for taking the time to sort me out. Regards muvoda.

Hi @muvoda BT Humax UHD 1TB - Just out of interest you would probably need to subscribe to BT Superfast Broadband and also subscribe to the BT Max 4K Package to get UHD on this box. Also the box comes free with those packages.
@LightFoot Thanks again, I DO understand what you are saying, but before your last reply I actually asked that very same question and Im waiting on a reply from them. So I'll let you know what his response is when (or if) I get one. Regards muvoda.

Hi @muvoda Of course you can use a BT box with YouView without any subscriptions etc. I was only talking about unlocking 4K UHD.
