Grey bars

Suddenly grey bars appear over the image where there were none before. (playing back.)

I'm using a handycam DCR-HC24.

There's a chance the tape heads are dirty and need a head cleaning tape running over them.

If this has no effect I'm afraid it could signal a component failure, in which case you would have to take it to a service centre for repair. Some guidance for Sony's official repair procedure is outlined in this sticky, or you could shop around locally.
