when i got the xperia 1 i had a couple of major complaints that made me send it back one of these complaints was the curved back and the fact that the screen would dim outside of specific apps, i have now used the xperia 5 for 2 days this is what i think so far.
what i like
1.i love the design more than the xperia 1 where the 1 had a curved backglass the 5 is flat so thats a step in the right direction towards why i liked xperia phones in the first place which is the flat designs
2.the screen is incredible it is so much better than my note 10+ the colors are better it has no red tint like the note 10+ the note 10 does appear more vibrant with some colors but the tone is flawless on the xperia 5
3.i love the android rom sony uses after having used the note 10+ for a month+ i can only say how much i missed stock android i can't stand oneui, the bug where the toggles go outside of the notificationpanel when using a custom dpi (600 which pushes the navigationbar to the bottom in landscape where it should be) has still not been fixed on xperia though i also don't like the black bar at the top of the notificationpanel when you pull it down
4.the glass of the xperia 5 feels much smoother than my note 10+ for some reason it's more difficult to move my hands on the note 10+ screen making some games difficult i have removed the preapplied plastic screen protector on the note 10+ though
what i didn't like
1.the dimming of the screen is still there after research i found out it's not xperia specific as it does it on my note 10+ too it's called hbm (high brightness mode) and only turns on when hdr content is present or certain apps like youtube the photos app or when you go in the display options or if you shine a led light ontop of the proximity sensor when the screen does go in the max brightness it's capable of it looks incredible white goes from slightly blue gray white to a pure perfect white, i want this brightness on the homescreen too for my wallpapers i hate that the brightness the display is capable of can only be seen in media i want my homescreen to be pretty too
2.the 21 9 aspect ratio i have tried it twice now both with the 1 and now 5 and it still hasn't grown on me i just don't like the way the phone looks when it's so thin and tall maybe it will be the norm in the future but right now i just don't like it it's a dealbreaker for me as the phone would look much nicer without it and design matters to me more than anything else when it comes to a smartphone it goes design and then screen
3.the curved screen corners i don't see why they have to be there why couldn't they be softwarebased? why try to obscure content with those corners? i also don't like the fact that the top has a speakergrill while the bottom doesn't the bezels are asymettrical look at the xperia z4 and z5 and z2 thats how i want it perfectly even bezels with edge speakers
4.the wideangle camera does a weird fisheye lens effect which bothered me on the xperia 1 too
5.the bloatware to force both fortnite and asphalt is too much as i mentioned in my xperia 1 thread
6.the absense of supervividmode i may be one among the few who loved this mode as i see noone saying anything about it but i want it back the note 10+ does get stronger colors than the xperia 5 for this reason i like vibrant colors over accurate ones, let us decide i don't mind having an automatic creators mode with super vivid mode but i want super vivid mode i have yet to see supervivid mode on an oled i want to buy the xperia xz3 just so i can see.

Thanks for nice review.
Is it possible to check if storage is UFS2.1 or UFS3.0?
Sony decilined to answer that question before.
well based on the benchmark i did it does seem to have 3.0 judging from these numbers
https://beebom.com/what-is-ufs-3-0/
2.1 has 749mb seq read while the xperia 5 has 833 mb
write being 165 mb
edit i did some research and it seems 3.0 has a readspeed of 2.1 gb so it can't be 3.0
You can turn the fish eye effect off for the wide angle camera. Go to camera settings - Lens Correction and select Prioritise correction for distortion.
For me, the curved screen corners are minimal and don't really obscure any content at all.
The Xperia 1 and 5 have been created with filmmakers in mind so that's why the screen is 21:9 to try and give a truly cinematic experience. I love it and it's pretty much the main reason, along with the Cinema Pro app, I chose the Xperia 1. I got mine before the Xperia 5 was announced, maybe if they'd been announced at the same time I'd have gone for the X5.
Great finding @JonHC
The angle of wide angle lens changes depending on the setting.
My thoughts about Xperia 1 or 5 are the same as yours.
Xperia 1 is nearly perfect in the hand, Xperia 5 even better, a perfect size!
