Hotspot and VPN

I got my Sony Xperia from Teco along with an 18-month contract which has now finished. I'm now on 02 which is working out OK. With the 02 contract, I get 22gb of data a month of which I only used 1b last month. (It does rollover), but with this much data, I want to set up a hot spot so I can use my Sungsang Galaxy tablet to get online when I'm out and about. 

But I don't want to share that data with anyone else and want to keep the connection private. I understand the Tethering procedure, but not how to keep it private between the tablet and phone. 

I'd be grateful if someone could explain how this is carried out

Settings - wifi and networks - Hotspot - turn it on, click on the details, show password, select the connection on the tablet, and enter the password on the tablet, and connect.

Couldn't be simpler.
