BDP-S590 - image through HDMI and surround through optical cable

Hi every one

I am new to the world of home cinema and I am having problems with the surround sound when playing blue ray or dvd on my BDP-s590. I guess my problems are due to my ignorance so hope some one here can help; I have connected the blue ray to Sony Bravia KDL-46HX850 with a HDMI but since my denon receiver does not support HDMI I have also used an optical cable linking the blue ray and the receiver. However it only seems that the sound sent to the reciever is stereo and not surround. I have tried changing the settings on the blue ray but nothing helps. Is it not possible to split the audio from the image when using HDMI - or have got it all complety wrong?

All help and suggestions are deeply appreciated.

Hi there

Not knowing the full setup you have - my phylosophy is if it doesnt work one way, try another.

Try connecting as follows

Blu-ray <HDMI> TV
TV <OPTICAL> Reciever

Change settings on TV to output audio to receiver via optical (if not automatic).
