topic Audio Volume Control to External System in Other TVs

I have connected my KDL-32EX403 to my Technics Audio System via a DAC using the optical output set to PCM. I have selected the option (variable) to control the audio o/p via the TV Remote. However this does not adjust the audio o/p which remains at a fixed level. Have I omitted a setting deep in the bowels of the Bravia system?
