Hi there,I had a vaio K315M it was 3.06 Ghz and pentium 4,I spilt a cup of tea over the keyboard ,I claimed on the insurance for a replacement.Well the company who delt with it replaced it with a vaio FS415B which is 1.7Ghz and centrino.

I rang up and said why did you replace it with a lower spec model they told me because it is new technology that the 1.7Ghz works out as the same as the my old model even though it was 3.06Ghz .
They said they dont make pentium 4 now on laptops and centrino is better.

I need advice as i know the basics only to be honest, are they trying to palm me off with a cheaper model or is it true what they claim?

Thanks Jess x

A difficult question especially as Insurance Companies dislike paying out money.

A Centrino of a lower clockspeed does perform as well as a higher speed Pentium 4, but whether a 1.7 is equivelant to a 3.06 I am not sure.

A Centrino will certainly give you much better battery life and a lot less heat (& fan blowing).

As to whether Companies no longer make notebooks with P4 CPU's, they certainly did unless things have changed very recently. They used them extensively because comparitevely speaking they were a lot cheaper, but the downside was heat and very short battery life.

I believe Mobile Pentium 4 chips have now progressed above 3.0 GHz.

You don't mention the HDD sizes, but in the Insurance Company's eyes it probably comes down to solely the price of your old laptop and the price of the replacemnent.

Perhaps other posters can give you a more definitive answer.

Hi baby_bells,

Here are the actual specifications of your old model K315M and here are the specifications of your new FS415B

looking at the specs your new system has double the hard drive and a slightly faster Optical drive that also allows you to burn dual layer DVD's.

I would say that the new system is better than your older one.

Based on Thalamus's post, obviously done while I was tapping away, it would seem on specs alone (Not just CPU) you have done OK.

I personally have never been motivated to buy a laptop with a desktop processor for reasons I have already mentioned.
