It could be that the vents are clogged with dust, but the model and age of your notebook will help members to advise you further.

It may prove that judicious use of compressed air applied to the cooling vents will solve your heat problem, but first download MobileMeter and report back on the CPU temperature.

The processor in your model (Intel Pentium M Processor 725) has a max temperature of 100 deg C but I would expect to see temperatures in the 50’s rising to the low 60’s during intense CPU activity

What I do is to have the computer running at constant low speeds when I'm reading news, e-mail, writing documents, watching movies, or any other cpu less intensive tasks - programs which don't use constantly the CPU -. Centrino's technology responds very well at speeds of 600-800 Mhz to this tasks, and you won't notice the differenece. This have the obvious advantage too of having less noise! For continous use of the CPU - rendering, compiling... - I turn it to adaptive and to maximum speeds. I suggest you to know the range of frequencies you have in your computer with each "level of control" under the vaio power management using mobile meter.
