I rarely use the battery but always have it installed. After around 18 months it has lost 18% of its capacity and lasts about 50% time it used to when new.

It has been run down about half a dozen times in total and is obviously constantly "Topped Up" by being permanently installed and plugged into the mains.

Even if you remove it it will lose its charge over time and when reinstalled again will immediately start charging when plugged into the mains..

I am no expert but I believe a battery starts decaying over time whether its used or not.

Hi, I use my Vaio VGN-FS195VP mostly connected to the AC outlet because the battery time is short (around 1,5 h). I wonder what is the best for the computer respective the batterypack, to have the batterypack installed in the computer or put in a drawer. One guy says it is good for the computer to have the batterypack installed. It protects the computer from electrical disturbances. Another guy says it’s better to run the computer without the pack installed and put the pack into a drawer. Anybody who knows? Rgds

Yeah this has come up many times. Lithium Batteries have a management chip on board so they are kept at a warm operating temperature and cannot be overcharged. If unmanaged they would explode. Ergo it is best to leave them in if there is a power outage or surge. Go to your powermanagement settings and set your computer from performance to adaptive or battery and turn down the brightness of your screen and disable any unused programs in the task manager. The only thing that wears out batteries is using them and recharging.

Thanks Tony for your info! However, I am a little unsure. You advice me to have the batterypack continuously in the computer. Not stored in a drawer. Then you advice me to go to my powermanagement settings. This I have done already erlier and I succeeded to extend the battery time from 1,5 h to ca 2 h (sorry, I wrote wrong figure above). Nevertheless I prefer in spite of this improvement (still bad for a centrino technology computer) not to use battery operation when I have an outlet nearby. But what I am a little unsure about is if you mean that it is good for the computer to use the battery when its charge permits battery operation..

Hi Bo Z,

You may find these links of interest regarding battery life and also this 2 quotes.

1} Removing the battery from the laptop when running on fixed power protects the battery from heat but some battery and laptop manufacturers caution against this practice. They say that dust and moisture accumulating inside the battery casing could damage the laptop. There is little evidence of this occurring in an office environment.

2}Try to keep the notebook plugged into the mains as often as possible. It is not recommended to remove the battery completely as Li-Ion batteries prefer to be kept topped rather than left on a shelf.

Laptop batteries have finite life spans and Rechargeable Lithium-based technology

At the end of the day I think it has to be your choice as there are so many conflicting answers to your question:smileyconfused:
