Help please I am going insane I have a vaio VGN-A217M the dvd works fine but the drive won't read cds/CD-ROM

Although your symptoms are different, you probably share the same drive as nealster1972 in this thread.

Have you tried everything in the sticky thread at the top of this Notebooks forum?

Hi Blencogo,

I tried what you had suggested in you message and have downloaded new driver and all, but to no avail all I hear is the drive trying to read the discs, I have program discs I would like to put on computer but alas it won't let me.

reading DVD's means that the drives region is set correctly, the cd-rom's are they your own recording, if so, then try burning them again at a slower burning speed ie change max to the slower speed in the drop down menu.
