Hi, A friend's Vaio has developed a problem with the screen. When I power it up I see two thin lines of random coloured spots right across the top part of the screen, the one showing the initial Vaio logo. Then when the Windows XP logo screen appears the lines of coloured blocks move to be above and below the loading progress bar. Finally, once XP has loaded I see five short narrow-ish bars of pink across the top of the screen. They are short, not screen width by any means, and always appear at the same place.
My friend recovered the system using the Sony utility, and the problem remains. I have tried it with an external monitor and the problem remains.

My feeling is that this is a hardware fault in the video circuitry (not the screen itself as the problem exists on an external monitor). What do you think?

Thanks for any help.

Hi Bayman and welcome to Club Vaio.

Unfortunately, I think you are right.

The problem appears to exist when using the default VGA driver during boot and also when using the full resolution driver within Windows. It all points to the Graphics Chip or its circuitry having developed a hardware fault.

You could try replacing the Graphics Driver with a recent update but I doubt this will fix it.

You don't say which model we are talking about, so it is difficult to be more specific.

The machine is a PCG-6G2M (Also known as VGN-S4M/S I think).

Repair shop job then, by the look of it.

Regards, Bayman
