Mouse pointer stutters on VGN-S4XP with Vista

Hi

I have just installed Vista Home Premium on a VGN-S4XP and I find that as I move the mouse, the pointer doesn't move smoothly but stutters as you move it across the screen i.e. momentarily stops and then continues on. I have tried a USB mouse instead of the in built mouse pad, but get the same results. Anybody got any ideas? I have installed Vista twice now and can't get rid of the problem plus I have installed all drivers etc in the correct order.

Thanks - it still does it and it is very annoying. It doesn't do it when windows first boots so is very annoying - seems like there is a driver somwhere which is clashing but I cannot find it. Any more ideas?

Hi Spencer,

do you have the same problem in Safe mode.?

To enter Safe Mode start your Vaio and when you see the Vaio logo press the F8 key repeatedly..

Works lovely in Safe Mode with no mouse stutter - looks a bit dull though

Must be a driver somewhere I assume.

Hi gadgetgeezer,

I think this may be difficult to identify the cause..

Try going into Task Manager and ending a system Process, then test your mouse again..

To enter Task Manager press and hold the Ctrl & Alt keys & then press the Delete Key.

Then select Start Task Manager..

If no improvement then try ending another process, and repeat..

If I end taskeng, this seems to cure it. But that doesn't sound too good. Any help appreciated.

Hi gadgetgeezer,

you can disable the taskeng.exe service but I wouldn't advise it as the Task Scheduler Engine is needed to help with the correct functioning of Vista..

You could try and Identify the task that is causing the problem by disabling a task in task scheduler and then testing your mouse each time..

Click Start , click All Programs , click Accessories, click System Tools then click Task Scheduler..

Click Continue on the User Account Control window.

In Task Scheduler, expand Task Scheduler Manager, then expand Microsoft

Click on the first task then in the middle section click on the task name

Over on the right hand column, if the task is running select End...

Perhaps Blencogo may have some other ideas.. :smileythinking:

Sadly, I don't think I can add much.

It is a matter of trial and error to find which of the Scheduled Tasks is causing the problem - it could be any of the Automatic Updates Vista is so fond of.

The only thing I have heard of to cause the erratic mouse pointer problem is the Real-Time Protection in Windows Defender which constantly scans the Registry and File System for malware. If you can't find another solution, it may be worth turning off the Real-Time Protection and seeing if it helps.

To turn off Real-Time Protection: -

1. Open Windows Defender. (Click Start, point to All Programs, and then click Windows Defender.)
2. Click Tools, and then click General Settings.
3. Under Real-Time Protection options, de-select the Use Real-Time Protection (recommended) check box.
4. Save and Exit.

Hope you find the culprit - have you tried looking in the Event Viewer System Log to see if any Services are causing errors?
