slow start up

Hi - This is driving me mad - I have a VGC- RA204 which up until a few days ago worked fine. However on inital start up the thing seems to hang for a long time. Once at log on point you can log on o.k. I have re-installed windows which seemed to cure the problem. However as I loaded back the various software and re-booted the problem returned. I have now re-installed windows several times, same problem, except now it hangs straight from a fresh re-install Seems to have got worse). It does eventually start up and I can log on. Once logged on it appears to work O.K, except for this really annoying long delay in inital starting up. My suspicion is a hard drive fault - anyone any idea's ?

If you press alt+ctrl+del which process is using up the CPU? I am wondering if it's VAIO Entertainment Platform?

I have just switched on my PC to check the CPU usage. Now I had turned my mouse & keyboard off (to save batteries). When I switched my PC back on I forgot to switch the mouse & keyboard back on, but - hey presto it fired up as it should at the correct speed. I have tried this several times and still works.

A had connected a cable mouse & keyboard just before the problem arose - I am now wondering if this could be the problem. Anyway the processes being used are:

anyway, this here is one reason for a slow start up

Go into C:\Windows\

There you will the folder prefetch.
Mark every file in folder "prefetch" and delete them.

Windows safes softeware entries there. Every Software which has an entrie in this folder will be load into the RAM at the system startup.
This will slowdown your VAIO some day. That's why it could be a good idea to delete the files every month or so.

I see you have Norton installed.

Have you tried disabling it to see if it is causing the problem?

It does funny things sometimes on Startup and Shutdown.
