Cheers Goodie.

Hadn't seen that one on my travels. Had a look at the spec and looks pretty good. Any idea what the seek times are? Have you got one of these babies?
The only problem might be the price, LaCie's drives are going much cheaper per gig. But saying that I'd prefer to go for a quality product.

Having got an external hard drive (only 20gb, but it was enough at the time)......I would think hard about what you need.

If you are happy using the hard drive on your desk and plugged into a mains supply, then there are plenty to choose from.

If you want a more portable solution, consider something like the new Sony Giga Vault, Up to 80GB, nad it runss just from your firewire or USB ports. No need for external power supply.

COst is a bit of a problem, but there are other similar things out there, including the Porsche ingot from Lacie

Thanks everyone for all your advice.

I decided to go for the WesternDigital 160GB which I purchased from www.ebuyer.com for the very reasonable price of £119.98+VAT with a 4-pin to 6-pin Sony i-Link cable for £5.79+VAT.

I mainly use my laptop at home so felt a mobile solution was unnecessary. (Although that GigaPocket looks sooo sexy!) Seems the WesternDigital drives have a slight performance advantage over the competition esp. on seek times and buffer size. Hence my choice.

Once again, thanks for the advice. This forum's pretty damn good!

Until the next time
