Overheating laptop

Hi all
Am new to this forum but hopefully you guys might know the answer! I purchased a PCG-8L2M model 20 months ago. The laptop gets extremely hot then shuts down sometimes after 20 minutes sometimes 30 minutes.

I have virus scanned with zone labs but this is -ive?

Any clues would be very much appreciate:smileyconfused:

Quite often it's somethng as simple as dust build up on your fans. After 20 months I should think there may be quite a bit by now.

Ah this time of the year, weather gets a bit hot, and VAIOs overheat.... guess thats the price for near silent computing.

Try using a hoover to clean your fans, make sure you have the fans on full too.

Yeah, the question here is :

Are the fans powerfull enough to cool down, a overheated CPU? The fans in my old VAIO can do this.

The hoover was good idea Kee-Lo. Normally the CPU in my VAIO has approx 45-47 degrees. After the hoover action, my VAIO works with 41-42 degrees.

What temperature is your laptop reaching?
You can get accurate temperature mesurement using this.

Hope a cleanup sorts it out.

Good question Seb, and yes I think you're right, but then customers would complain the fans are too loud, catch 22 again....

whoa...just checked that program mobile meter to check my laptop stats, its hitting around 60 degrees! any help on coolin it down?

i've tried cleanin out my laptop...

hi again, remember i spoke to you about the heat under my lap top, i checked out the link to mobilemeter, its really good i been using it my cpu is 56 oC is that good?

Is that a Intel Centrino CPU or a Intel Pentium4?

If it a Centrino, then I think it's Ok, but for a Pentium4 it's a bit high.(by normal working, by 100% CPU usage I had measured 73degrees on my VAIO)72 degrees are critical for a Pentium4 and approx 100degrees for the Centrino.

its a centrino m processor the max i messured was 60 oC but that was the cpu at 100% its running cooler now since i been using the laptop on a work top, before i was using it on the carpet which was making it heat under, now i got a piece of glass

Yeah carpet isn't good for the VAIO Ant

I have given the laptop a gentle hoover. The temp is currently 76C and the HDD #0 is 44C (Sorry guys, but what is the first temp reading? I assume HDD is Hard Disk Drive?!?) after approx 45 minutes of running on a worktop.

Any views?:smileytongue:

PS you can probably tell I am a complete IT novice. Accounting/Tax/Investment and performance cars are my skills should any body require!!

Yep, HDD is the harddisk, but 45 degrees is a little bit warm. 76degrees maybe OK for a Centrino CPU but not for Pentium 4 (you have a Centrino)

I have read that the max. stable temperature for a Centrino is approx 100 degrees. So, I think your laptop could be very hot if you stress the CPU.

I am a complete IT novice.

LOL, same here. I have learned this out of my own bad/good experience and the experience from other people. I think, "learning by doing" are the right words for this.:smileywink:
