WOW.

Ok this WILL be difficult you know, VAIO-Link have no drivers...

Lemme see...

Intel 915 Chipset - get the drivers for this motherboard from Intel.
Realtek Audio - drivers available - download them from Realtek
USB - this will be USB1.1 only because there will never be USB 2.0 support in Microsoft Windows 98SE, the WIndows drivers WILL work but will be very slow.

Modem - should be fine with Windows 98 drivers

FireWire - Windows own native drivers will work fine with this...

LCD - choose max 1024x768 at 60Hz to prevent damage.

Graphics Card - Intel drivers are NOT available for Windows 98, but the Windows 2000 drivers MAY work. This is because the Windows 98 Kernel has NTKERN.VXD built-in for NT-level drivers, so theoretically it should work! DOwnload the drivers from HERE

WLAN may not work without a specific driver. Sony do not state what make this is, so you need to have a look at Device Manager or use EVEREST Home Edition

RAM - Windows 98 SE I think has a limit of 512MB of RAM - any more than this and it will fail.

Hard Disk - use FAT32 to partition this drive, if you are using NTFS at the moment then you MUST reformat the desired installation partition for Windows 98 SE.

Mouse - Windows 98 should find its own touchpad driver.

MemoryStick Pro Slot - may be problematic. Try installing the XP driver for it on your Windows 98 installation (TIFMSONY.SYS)

Network - Most Sony PC's use Realtek, so getting drivers here should not be a problem!:smileyhappy:

Docking station - if it needs a driver then the chances are it probably WONT work.

PC Card Slot - should work fine, Windows tends to use its own drivers anyway for this.

Installation tips.
Use a partition size of at least 1 GB preferably 2-3GB to do real work with it. Install Windows 98 from MS-DOS or by booting from the Windows 98 Setup CD-ROM - never install it from inside Windows XP.

Limitations
Some of the hardware may not work. If the graphics card does not work then use the Microsoft Standard VGA Driver (the graphics will look awful but at least it WILL work!). The Sony bundled applications and recovery disk will NOT run under this non-preinstalled operating system, so you cannot use WinDVD for instance. Use a boot manager to boot the new Windows 98 partition, or if you are savvy with these things, edit BOOT.INI under Windows XP

Why do it? Well Windows 98 provides MS-DOS 7 needed for some very old applications, and is about the only 32-bit semi-stable OS that can run these older games and applications. Support is non-existant but sometimes if things don't work under XP then what choice do you have?
